Dan Dehaan on www.Youtube.com, Please!

When I was in College in 1977, I attended a Bible Study in Atlanta, Georgia at Griffin Middle School.

It was called the Metro Bible Study.

Charles “Dad” Ellis had started this Bible Study in his basement, and it had grown to be over a thousand people.

A Christian Band called the Pat Terry Group lead the music http://www.patterryonline.com/ .

When I found out that the Pat Terry Group played there at that Bible Study, I began to attend.

Here is Pat Terry on

The teacher, Dan Dehaan, whom I didn’t know beforehand, was in his early thirties.

As I attended the Bible Study, Dan made a friendship with a linebacker on the Atlanta Falcons named Greg Brezina.

Dan was later asked to be the team chaplain for the Atlanta Falcons through his relationship with Greg.

The starting quarterback at the time was Steve Bartkowski, who was the first overall NFL draft pick in 1975. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bartkowski

During the time that Dan Dehaan was the Champlain of the Atlanta Falcons, Quarterback; Steve Bartkowski had a difficult year, and was benched in favor of Quarterback, June Jones.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Jones .

June who was a Christian told Steve that he was going to start until Steve got right with the Lord.

Shortly thereafter, Steve became a Christian, and eventually retook his starting position.

After Steve came to the Lord, there was a revival on the Atlanta Falcons, and the Falcons began to win.

In 1980, the Falcons made it all the way to the NFC Title Game where they lost to the Dallas Cowboys.

While Dan taught the Metro Bible Study at Griffin Middle School, it eventually outgrew their auditorium.

At that time, the Bible Study was moved to the First Baptist Church of Smyrna, Georgia.

Then, Dan began to take pilot’s lessons, and planned to teach a second Metro Bible Study in Tupelo, Mississippi.

During the summer of 1982, Dan crashed his airplane right off Highway 72 near Paint Rock just east of Huntsville, Alabama.

When Dan came up missing, Dad Ellis and some of the guys from the Metro Bible Study drove up to North Alabama, and searched until they found Dan’s body.

Dan had made arrangements to take over the summer of 1982 off with John Riley
http://www.johnsriley.com/ teaching for him.

After Dan’s death, John Riley taught the Bible Study for several years.

Under John, It eventually outgrew the First Baptist Church of Smyrna and was then moved to Mt. Paran Church of God.

Later, it was moved again to Mt. Paran’s North campus where it could seat several thousand people.

Before Dan’s death at 33 years of age, Dan wrote a biography for Steve Bartkowski called “Intercepted by Christ”.

Dan was a gifted speaker, and had a passion for the Lord.

While Dan Dehaan taught the Metro Bible Study, Andy Stanley
http://www.northpoint.com/ occasionally attended.

I believe that Dan’s teaching had and still has a great influence upon Andy Stanley’s teaching and approach.

If anyone out there still has any of Dan Dehaan’s teaching tapes.

Please put them on Youtube.com.

Dan should not be forgotten, and I’d like to listen in.

Here is Dan Dehaan's replacement, John Riley speaking years later

  1. I heard Dan in the mid 70's. Great teacher. I used to have some of his sermons on tape. Wales Gobel ministry in Birmingham probably has some in their tap library.

  2. I heard Dan at a winter retreat shortly before his death. He was a wonderful man after God's own heart. I know that he and Paul have been enjoying the fellowship in heaven! Thanks for this post.

  3. I had a set of the "Before you Say I do" dating tapes Dan did and let someone borrow them years ago. If anyone has those I would like a copy on CD or something . I would like to give to my kids.

  4. I ordered tapes from Metro for years while John Riley was teaching and have been thinking about posting those - but I was not sure about copyright infringement. I assume that John Riley is no longer teaching at Metro?

I'm told that he lives in Abbeville, SC, and I believe no longer speaks at the Metro Bible Study.

    1. I too am looking for a copy of "Before You Say "I Do'". I went through that video series 20 years ago at my church. Although the clothing styles were "dated" then, the message was not. Even today I believe it is the best resource I could have for a study I want to lead today. If anyone has any information on a copy I can borrow I would be grateful. If I can legally make DVD copies, I will return a copy with the VHS's. Please send me an e-mail to davez@earthlink.net

  9. I heard Dan DeHaan speak at Columbia Bible College in 1980. God really used him to speak to me. When I went to CBC, his son was at the school.

  10. I was given Dan DeHaan tapes as a Christmast gift in December of 1985, think I was a christian I did not think I needed these, however as I soon found a head knowledge of Christ is certainly different than a heart knowledge of Christ. Through the tapes that Dan created I was saved and found Jesus in May of 1986. If I can find these tapes I will convert them and upload them. Dan DeHaan was a profound teach and lover of our Lord. I was saved riding down a country road here in south GA with Dan allowing the holy spirit to speak God's truth. I cannot wait to meet him someday...

  13. When I started attending Dan's Bible Study in 1977 - 82 at Griffin Middle School - 1st Baptist of Smyrna, it had only about 300 people and grew to about 1000 people. Also, Dan attended the First Baptist Church in Atlanta during the time, and I heard him speak several occasions there. One Sunday morning there were about 12 of us praying for Dr. Stanley's message together and Dan was leading that group. Also, one evening after his Bible study, I talked to Dan for about 5 minutes and gave him a tape of one of my Bible Studies. That was about as much personal contact with Dan that I had.

I have read several of Andy Stanley's books and Andy attributes a lot of his personal journey to Dan. To me, Andy teaches more like Dan than his own father. If you didn't already know it, Dan personally discipled Andy when Andy was still a teenager. When I hear Andy, it is so much like Dan's teaching that I think that I'm actually hearing Dan. In fact, I think that Andy is influencing a lot of young preachers today, and in reality, Dan's influence lives on.

    1. Andy Stanley was in my Sunday School class when he was a teenager. And, I remember attending Dan's studies at the Dad Ellis Bible study and I also remember Pat Terry. Two of the guys in his group married twins, I believe.

Dan's tape on the Life of Paul really had an impact on me because it showed me how to pull stories out of the bible and teach them to young people. He was the best and I grieved over his death because people were missing out on his talks. I know that God knew what he was doing, but Dan is still missed.

  14. When I first started attending Dan's Bible Study, it was lead by "the Pat Terry Group". One of Pat's band members was Sonny Lallerstedt who is still in the Atlanta area. I just happen to know how to reach him although I've haven't spoken to Sonny personally in almost 30 years. He is the worship leader of the North Metro Church http://northmetro.org/staff. In fact, Sonny is married to the daughter of the man ,Dad Ellis, who started the Bible Study that Dan taught in Atlanta.

  17. Wow. I wonder if I crossed paths with some of you back in the mid-late 70s. I became a Christian in 1975 and not long afterwards began attending "Dad" Ellis' study at Griffin Middle School with Pat Terry singing regularly and Dan DeHaan teaching. That study had a tremendous impact on me as a new Christian. I was at the study the night Dan's wife had their son. A couple years later, I rented a room for a summer with a family living out in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Dan and his wife lived next door. I got to babysit Dan's little boy. :-) In 1980, I went to Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee (small Christian college)and Dan always came to speak to the student body each year. All the students loved him and looked forward to his sessions each year. We were all devastated to learn he died in a plane crash. Ironically, his wife had been married before, and was widowed when her first husband was piloting a plane and crashed also. We dedicated our yearbook to Dan the year he was killed. I was just looking at my yearbook the other night and was reminded of Dan and the impact he had on my life over 30 years ago.

  18. I inadvertenly came across one of Dan's books (The God You Can Know) back in 1989. I was involved in ministry, but miserable and feeling like I didn't really know God. His book was outstanding, and I unfortunately lost it over the years. I finally found it on Amazon, and the one person I lent it to so far decided to buy it for himself. Dan, although I only read one of his books, is someone I definitely want to thank in heaven.

  19. I was reading from The God You Can Know this morning during my devotion. I received this copy of Dan Dehaan's book in the 80's while a student at Auburn University. Other than the Bible, his book has made the greatest impact on my relationship with Christ. I now live in Atlanta, and I enjoyed reading of how so many throughout the city were influenced by Mr. DeHaan's life. I throughly enjoyed hearing from those of you who had the opportunity to know him. I still pray for the DeHaan family...Only heaven will tell of his impact here.

  21. Although every one of Dan's studies were gripping and relevant, I feel his deepest study was the one entitled "The Ten Steps To Drifting." This is a study every Christian should listen carefully to as it points out how subtle and dangerous drifting can be.

    1. Nothing better than the "ten steps." Many of my college youth were impacted by them. Purchased tons of Dan's tapes at Ridgecrest in North Carolina (Youth Evangelism Leadership Conference) in 1980. I was so impacted by his ministry.

  23. I first heard of Dan Dehaan and his ministry after reading the book, "Intercepted" which was about Atlanta Falcons quarterback Steve Bartkowski. Dehaan, along with Bartkowski, wrote the autobiography/testimonial together. Being a huge Falcons fan and learning of Mr. Bartkowski's life both before and after he gave his life to Christ, this book greatly influenced me as a young christian.

I have been in touch with Chreyl, with T.C.L., Inc. over the years and keeping up with her on the transition of the tapes of Dan's sermons over to CD.'s. Al Holley and I are looking to put together, a Metro bible study reunion with some of his songs and a message from the late Dan DeHaan. It would be a time of fellowship, a few testimonies, music and message that will be projected over the sound system. We are in the planning process and will be working with Cheryl Byler,on this plan. It would be a time of renewing some acquaintances and hearing Al Holley, along with the depths of Dan's teaching from the word of God.

  28. I attended Metro Bible Study from 1979 until I went to Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions (the grad school at Columbia Bible College). I knew Dan as he came down to my home, St. Simons Island often and visited mutual friends here. I was changed by the Lord during his teaching and presentation style as I grew to understand so many things I never knew before. It created a passion to know this great God.

Charles "Dad" Ellis calls me about once per year to catch up a little. I did not know about Al Holley's and Cheryl's desire to have a reunion and to put Dan's teachings on cd format. After this posting, I look forward to seeing if that has been accomplished. It would be "salve to the heart" to hear him teach again as I do not have any tapes. Let me know if any of you have any formatted to cd as I would be glad to purchase any copies from you. My email is lawrencewade@hotmail.com Thanks.

  29. I went to FBA, and Colonial Hills Christian School and was privileged to hear Dan speak several times, and I had several opportunities to chat with him. He was an incredible example. I attended Metro through the time John Riley led it. Under Louie Giglio it became 722, and birthed the Passion movement. Don't know what happened to it from there.

  30. I was in Richmond, VA in the late 70s. Ray Easterling who played for the Falcons was a member of my church, and I guess that was how Dan ended up with a ministry there as well. (Bethany Place Baptist Church) He started what was such a novel concept at that time and my church bought into it. He put the teachings of Bible scholars from around the world into a video format (BETA?) It was a tremendous series and Dan did this before he was 30!
I had a copy of Before You Say I Do, but have no idea where it went. I thought of it many times as my own children were going through their teens.

Our youth group had almost 100 kids at one time during his ministry at the church. Many of us have found each other again through Facebook and we all have talked with each other about how blessed we were to have Dan as the Youth Director. He impacted many of us for a life time. I can't believe how many years ago that was. Dan came to our church in 1970. We as a group did a missions tour all the way up the east coast when I was 14 yrs old and we stopped at Dan's parents house on the way to Canada. Your family was such a beautiful family.

  32. I was a charter student of Dan's "Institute of Biblical Studies", back in '75. Though not a good student, I sure learned a lot! I still have a box full of his tapes. In '76-'77, I drove a school van full of college students from Shorter College in Rome, GA to Smyrna for the bible study, and to hear The Pat Terry Group, or occasionally Al Holley. I guess all of us who grew under his teachings tended to "borrow" some of his teaching style while we taught our own Sunday School Bible Study! He not only knew the Lord, he KNEW that he knew, and that inspired us to be very confident in Who we know, and in how very much Jesus cares for us! What a solid foundation.

  33. It's so great to see how Dan's life goes on touching lives these many years later. I knew him for a number of years and was strongly influenced by his life. I attended the Metro Bible Study for years and played in a group called "Celebrate," a contemporary Christian group that played at times at the Metro Study when the Pat Terry Group was on the road. I also played bass briefly with Al Holley later on. Dan had much to do with me giving my life to full-time Christian service, first as a youth director, then as a pastoral Christian counselor to this day. Dan died on Feb.19, 1982 which is my wife's and my son's birthday. I and thousands attended his funeral at FBC Atlanta, and at the end the "Halleluiah Chorus" was played. Dan was a friend, mentor, and example of how God wants believers to be extensions of Jesus Christ to this fallen world. I imagine he is just beginning to rejoice with the saints in heaven, and the reunion with him and those he pointed to Christ in his brief life is more than words can describe. God's richest blessings to everyone, and Cheryl, if you read this, a special thanks to you for your life and ministry that continues!

  34. It is also great to see how Charles "Dad" Ellis has touched so many lives. The Ellis family started Metro Bible Study in their home, for their teens. Through the years God increased Metro and it grew exponentially. I began attending Metro Bible Study in 1991. It met at Mt. Paran Church of God, North Campus. I published the Metro newsletter for several years, working closely with Dad Ellis and his leadership team. I also participated in the Metro Bible Study Friday Nights Streets ministry to the homeless in downtown Atlanta. I met my husband through the streets ministry and Metro helped send a team of us to Samara, Russia in September 1992. Metro helped take 100,000 Russian language New Testaments to Samara and on that trip, we personally handed out hundreds of Bibles in primary schools, high schools and a local engineering school. I was there when Chick-fil-A's Truett Cathy, and the board members that oversaw Metro honored Dad Ellis for 25 years of faithful service to the Atlanta community. Mr. Cathy joined a group of us after that service at the local Chick-Fil-A. We kept telling the management that he was coming...what a shock to that restaurant when he showed up! What an influence Dad Ellis had on so many of us. I still have copies of those early newsletters. I am very thankful for Dad Ellis and Metro Bible Study...

Once again, I give God thanks for Charles Ellis and his family. What an impact one family has had on so many people. Thanks Dad! I Corinthians 1:4 says my heart...I always thank God for you because of His grace given you in Christ Jesus..."

We drove our youth group there every week. We were in a small Bible Study Dad did for leaders and served on the leadership team for Metro. In fact, I wrote the first Metro newsletter and continued it for awhile. I'd forgotten all about that! Dan's teaching helped shape our spiritual walks and we were deeply grieved by his early death. There are so many things he writes about that have stayed with me through the years, though, and in reading the book, I see just how much of an influence his teaching had on me.

  47. In 1980 I attended a conference where Dan was speaking and God used Dan’s messages to turn a drifting soul back to his Savior after many years of pushing God away. After that encounter I collected a number of cassette tape series that were a blessing to me. Forty years later I still had the tapes buried in a closet and in my attempts to simplify life it dawned on me that these should be made available to others. Dan’s intensity and passion were infectious and this generation (as well as mine) needs to hear it.

So I started to convert the old fragile tapes to MP3 format. I’ve looked on the internet to see if any of his messages are out there but I haven’t seen anything. So far I've converted about 120 messages to MP3 format. If anyone is interested in listening to Dan's messages email me at gary.mcghan@icloud.com and I'll send you a link to a cloud storage site where you can listen to them directly from the site or download them for offline listening. I hope these can be a blessing too many.
