Say Yes to More Things

Philippians 3:12 (ESV)

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

God has called us to be people of the future.  Learn to say yes to more challenges.

1.  Progress isn't always about moving fast.  It's about gaining ground.

2.  Seize the moment when it's there.

3. Family and friends make us perform at a higher level.

4.  Sometimes you need a good breakdown to get a breakthrough.

5. Don't think about how far you have to go.

6. God will send you angels of mercy along the way if you don't quit.

7. God can resurrect you from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs.

8. Don't run from challenges.

9.  Don't be held back by yesterdays mess ups.

How to Move Forward

Personal maturity starts by seeing beyond ourselves, but spiritual maturity begins by putting others before ourselves.

John 13:34-35  (ESV)

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Luke 10:29  (ESV)

29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

1.  We are blinded by our own needs.

2.  We see people's differences as barriers.

3.  We avoid inconvenience.

Galatians 6:2  (ESV)

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

How to move forward- put others first.

1.  Start with prayer.

Matthew 19:13-15 (ESV)

13 Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, 14 but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went away.

2. Show commitment to those closest to us.

John 13:5 (ESV)

Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

3. Share everything that we have.

Luke 10:35  (ESV)

35 And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’

Prioritizing ourselves brings no long term satisfaction.  Prioritizing others is the key to a meaningful life.

There is Power in Affirmation

My coach called out the champion in me.  Do you realize the power of your words?

Matthew 5:16 (ESV)

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Live a life that draws people to you, so you can lead them to Jesus.

How to live an attractive life.

1. Speak encouraging words to each other.

Your words will either draw or repel.

Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

You can't spread light if you're speaking darkness.

If you don't know your true identity in Christ, you can't call out the champion in others.

Look for the best.  Think the best.  Speak the best.

Proverbs 18:21 (ESV)

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits.

You must see yourself as God sees you.

The more that you reaffirm who you are in Christ.  The more your behavior will begin to reflect your true identity.

How to live a life that's affirming.

1. Be intentional about your thought life.

2 Corinthians 10:5  (ESV)

We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

2. Spend time with the right people.  They set the tone and speech for your life.  Who are you running with?

Father's Day

God has some things He wants to put in us, and He uses people to do it.

Psalm 145:4  (ESV)

One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.

1. My dad taught me the valve to excellence.

He taught stewardship and tithing.  God owns everything, and I am His manager.

Matthew 6:19-21  (ESV)

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Our job is to make the biggest difference for God that we can.

2.  My father-in-law, Billy Hornsby, taught attitude.

Life is 10% of what happens to us and 90% on how we respond.

2 Corinthians 6:10 (ESV)

10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.

3. Roy Stockstill taught me humility.
A  person on their face before God can ever fall from that position.

Matthew 5:5  (ESV)

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

Matthew 11:29  (ESV)

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

4.  Larry Stockstill taught me the importance of prayer.

Prayer should be our 1st response and not our last resort.

Matthew 17:19-20 (ESV)

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.

5. John Maxwell taught me the value to people.

He said to put a 10 on everyone.  See everyone not as they are, but as they could be.  Believe the best about everyone.

Matthew 7:12 (ESV)

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

John 8:10-11  (ESV)

10 Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”]]

1 Corinthians 4:14-16 (ESV)

14 I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. 15 For though you have countless[a] guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 16 I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

Malachi 4:6  (ESV)

And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

If you're disappointed by your past.

1.  Allow God to heal the Father wound.

Psalm 68:5-6  (ESV)

Father of the fatherless and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.
God settles the solitary in a home;
he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

2.  Be a father.  Pour your life into someone else.

Reap what you sow.  Leadership is influence.

Galatians 6:7  (ESV)

Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

3. Relate to God as Father.

Romans 8:15-16 (ESV)

15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

God has great things for us.
