John 12:1-8 NLT
1 Six days before the
Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the
man he had raised from the dead.
2 A dinner was prepared in
Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with
him.
3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce
jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’
feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the
fragrance.
4 But Judas Iscariot, the
disciple who would soon betray him, said,
5 “That perfume was worth a
year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”
6 Not that he cared for the
poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he
often stole some for himself.
7 Jesus replied, “Leave her
alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.
8 You will always have the
poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Three things about Judas:
1. Judas sounds prudent.
Judas was more concerned
about saving money than showing love for Jesus.
John 12:5 NLT
5 “That perfume was worth a
year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”
2. Judas sounds practical.
When Mary looks at Jesus and
when Judas looks at Jesus, they are not looking at Jesus the same way.
Mary said He's worth it. Judas said He isn't.
John 12:5 NLT
5 “That perfume was worth a
year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.”
3. Judas is a thief.
John who wrote this book knew
Judas really well. He called Judas for who he really is, a thief.
If you don't tithe, you are
robbing God (Malachi 3:8). If you don't give to others, you are robbing
yourself.
John 12:6 NLT
6 Not that he cared for the
poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he
often stole some for himself.
One thing about
Jesus: Do whatever Jesus says.
You’ll always have an
opportunity to do THAT, but you won’t always have an opportunity to do THIS.
If you'll just do what Jesus says,
you can impact the world.
What is the Holy Spirit
saying to me through this message?
