THE IMPORTANCE OF ENCOUNTER

(2 Corinthians 3:16-17 Message) “Whenever, though, they turn to face God as Moses did, God removes the veil and there they are—face-to-face! They suddenly recognize that God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We're free of it!”

 We need power not just words.

(1 Corinthians 2:3-5) “I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.”

 We need an experience not just an explanation.

(John 9:17, 25) Finally they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him?” He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

 We need presence not just practice.

(Acts 2:28) “You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.”

PREPARING FOR ENCOUNTER

(Matthew 13:14-15) In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.”

(Hosea 10:12) “Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.”

1. Desperation: Wanting God’s way. (Matthew 5:6) “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

2. Humility: Wanting God’s will. (Luke 22:42) “…yet not my will, but yours be done.”

3. Repentance: Wanting God’s work. (Psalm 51:10-13) “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then  I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you."

Relationship Planning

Be kind and friendly to people who travel through your life.

Watch your body language and tone.

Smile.

To harvest kindness, you've got to sow it into others.

Bring out the best in others.

Our best friends are the friends who bring out the best in us.

Focus on what others are doing right.

Don't focus on what they are right now, but what they are becoming.

Peter struggled, but Jesus saw what Peter would become with His help, which was a solid person like a rock.

Don't take others for granted.

Compliment.

Compliments are the glue that hold relationships together.

Be free with heartfelt compliments.

Speak them out loud.

If you can't give away money, surely you can at least give away a compliment.

You are never more like God than when you give.

Keep strife out of your life.

We've got to give everybody a little bit of room.

Give people the benefit of the doubt.

We shouldn't expect them to be perfect. (read I Cor. 13:5-6)

Love allows for the faults of others.

Get into the habit of being positive.

Ask do you want to be right, or do you want to have peace?

Don't make a big deal out of things that are not a big deal.

Other people change when you keep a good attitude and quit nagging.

We need to adapt to keep the peace.

Learn to swallow your pride, and get your mind off yourself.

Be a maker of peace.

Allow for others to have a bad day every once and a while.

God's Voice

You can recognize God's voice through developing your relationship with Him.

In the beginning in Genesis, God spoke to Adam and in the end God spoke to John in Revelation.

If we have a personal relationship with God, how can we do that without the ability to hear Him?

Jesus said that He is not going to leave us as orphans (John 14:18).

1. Our relationship with God is our highest priority.

Genesis 3:8-10  (NKJV)

8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9 Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”

Look at the progression in verse 10 below.  They became afraid of the voice of God when they sinned.

10 So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

God was walking and talking with Adam in the beginning, so He sent His Son, Jesus, so that we can walk and talk with Him again.

Only you can develop your relationship with God.  We can know His voice if we spend a lot of time with Him.  This is our highest priority.

2. Our relationship with Him is our highest pursuit.

There were two trees in the Garden of Eden.  The Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

God never meant for us to live by choosing between good and evil, but by listening to His voice.

God never wanted us to know Good or Evil.  Our question should be is it Good or is it God?

God gave us a conscience when we sinned.  It's suppose to bring us to God, but it can't.  God never intended for us to live through our conscience.

1 Timothy 1:5 (NKJV)

5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

If you live by hearing the voice of God, you'll have a good conscience.

Is God limited to your conscience?  What if you're getting it wrong?  God told Abraham to sacrifice his son.  Wouldn't that violate your conscience?  Adam and Eve lived by the voice of God before the fall.

3. It's our highest passion.

Luke 10:38-42 New King James Version (NKJV)

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word.

40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.

42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

The one thing that is needed is to sit at Jesus's feet and to hear His words.  Mary figured it out.  No one else can hear God's voice for you.

On Mount Sinai, the people withdrew from the voice of God with fear, but Moses drew near (Exodus 20:18-21).

He was the only one that God spoke to like a friend (Exodus 33:11).  Only you can draw near to God like a friend.

If you are God's daughter or son, you can hear from God.

Tell God, I'm going to do my best to develop my relationship with you and to hear your voice.

Holy Spirit draw the readers of these words to you.

The Tree of Life - Chris Hodges

I'm going to give you a bedrock teaching.

It's how to be life giving.

It has application to your business, and your home life.

The only time that you ever saw Jesus fired up is with the religious style of approach to God.

You can be religious in any style of worship.

Matthew 23:25-27 (NIRV)

25 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees!

You pretenders!

You clean the outside of a cup and dish.

But on the inside you are full of greed.

You only want to satisfy yourselves.

26 Blind Pharisee!

First clean the inside of the cup and dish.

Then the outside will also be clean.

27 “How terrible for you, teachers of the law and Pharisees!

You pretenders!

You are like tombs that are painted white.

They look beautiful on the outside.

But on the inside they are full of the bones of the dead.

They are also full of other things that are not pure and ‘clean.’

We will not change the Word of God to fit our generation.

The word of God is pure and ageless.

Some of us were locked into ritual.

What was missing is that it was burdensome and hard.

It was out of duty and not out of delight.

The motivation was completely wrong.

When I found a life giving church.

The thing that lead me to Christ was finding people who liked to be there.

Have you every been in an environment when you wanted to be there and one that you did't.

There are different types of teachers.

One made the subject enjoyable and one that did not.

There is something about their motivation that is different.

How do you get right behavior?

How do you make prayer and Bible Study enjoyable?

The answer is very simple and yet very complex.

We want to get to the place where we want too instead of that we have too.

It's about an inner transformation.

Its human nature to want the external constraints.

We have signs on the highway that instruct us what to do.

We watch for police while breaking the law.

To a lot of people, that's what serving God is all about.

As a parent, I don't want to just change their behavior, but to transform their heart.

The gospel is the transformation of the inner man.

Religion says do the right thing.

The Gospel says let God give you a brand new nature, so you'll become righteous and do the right thing.

Hebrews 8:7-12 (NIRV)

7 Suppose nothing had been wrong with that first covenant.

Then no one would have looked for another covenant.

8 But God found fault with the people.

 He said,
“The days are coming, announces the Lord.

I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel.

I will also make it with the people of Judah.

9 It will not be like the covenant
I made with their people of long ago.

That was when I took them by the hand.
I led them out of Egypt.

My new covenant will be different because they didn’t remain faithful to my old covenant.

So I turned away from them,
    announces the Lord.

10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, says the Lord.

I will put my laws in their minds.

I will write them on their hearts.
I will be their God.

And they will be my people.

11 People will not teach their neighbor anymore.

They will not say to one another, ‘Know the Lord.’

That’s because everyone will know me.

From the least important to the most important,
all of them will know me

12 I will forgive their evil ways.

I will not remember their sins anymore.” (Jeremiah 31:31–34)

People who don't know God cannot be motivated because there is nothing going on inside of them.

This is the difference between the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

John 14:15 (NIRV)

15 “If you love me, obey my commands.

If you build the relationship, then you'll get right behavior.

I read it this way.

If you love me, you'll behave yourselves.

Now I read it.

If you are in love with me, obeying my commands will be a piece of cake.

Love is a delight and is not burdensome.

From the very beginning of time, God gave man the same choice.

He did it in the form of trees.

The Knowledge of Good and Evil, which is external behavior(Genesis 2).

Good is just as dangerous as evil.

If you know good, then you'll know when you don't do it.

What are we going to do to become Godly?

Its hard to distinguish between the two trees.

Satan said that you'll be like God if you eat the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which killed Adam and Eve.

In our pursuit, we think that we're right and others are wrong.  This will hurt you and others.

What two things happened when Adam and Eve sinned?

They blamed someone else. They had shame.  (They felt nasty).

Galatians 1:6-7 (NIRV)

6 I am amazed.

You are so quickly deserting the one who chose you. He chose you to live in the grace that Christ has provided.

You are turning to a different “good news.”

7 What you are accepting is really not the good news at all.

It seems that some people have gotten you all mixed up.

They are trying to twist the good news about Christ.

Don't focus on doing the right thing instead focus on motivation.

1. Religion is spelled do.
2. Christianity is spelled done.

3. Religion is man's attempt to reach God.
4. Christianity is God's attempt to reach man.
5. Religion focuses on the external.

6. Christianity focuses on the internal.

Which means that you have to have the right motivation to love to pray more,
to love to do more,  to love to give more, to love to serve more.

It's why we never recruit volunteers here.

We don't want people who don't what to do it.

We build ministry around what's inside of you.

What's your passion?

What did God do when Adam and Eve sinned?

 God went looking for them.

God has that passion to find His children.

God is not yearning to punish.

God is so in love with humanity.

When you mess up, God loves you.

Why is our viewpoint messed up about God?

We don't treat any body that way that's why it's hard for us to identify with it.

Isaiah 55:6-9 (NIRV)

6 Turn to the Lord before it’s too late.

Call out to him while he’s still ready to help you.

7 Let those who are evil stop doing evil things.

And let them quit thinking evil thoughts.

Let them turn to the Lord.

The Lord will show them his tender love.

Let them turn to our God.

He is always ready to forgive.

8 “My thoughts are not like your thoughts.

And your ways are not like my ways,”
    announces the Lord.

9 “The heavens are higher than the earth.

And my ways are higher than your ways.

My thoughts are higher than your thoughts.

1. Approach God through relationship not rules.

Use this in your home.

Don't focus on serving God.

Focus on loving God.

If you're not obeying God, that exposes your lack of love.

John 5:39-40 (NIRV)

39 You study the Scriptures carefully.

You study them because you think they will give you eternal life.

The Scriptures you study are a witness about me.

40 But you refuse to come to me and receive life.

2.
How do you respond to sin with life?

In the moment when someone else sins, you can test the tree of life.

Get back to the right motivation.

It's like you hate the abortionist, or if you love the unborn child.

What's the motivation?

3. Guard your heart from going back.

Focus on your motivation for every thing you do.

Proverbs 4:23 (NIRV)

23 Above everything else, guard your heart.

Everything you do comes from it.
