Mercy Me?

Our God who is just is also a God of mercy.  We who have experienced God's mercy are to be merciful.

Matthew 5:7 (NKJV)

Jesus teaching: Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy.

The first four of the beatitudes
are internal.

Matthew 5:3-6  (NIRV)

“Blessed are those who are spiritually needy.
The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.
Blessed are those who are sad.
    They will be comforted.
Blessed are those who are humble.
They will be given the earth.
Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for what is right.
    They will be filled.

The last four are external.

Matthew 5:7-10(NIRV)

Blessed are those who show mercy.
    They will be shown mercy.

Blessed are those whose hearts are pure.
    They will see God.
Blessed are those who make peace.
They will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who suffer for doing what is right.
The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

The beatitudes build upon each other.  They are like steps going into the presence of God, and we need God's presence.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 6:23 (NKJV)

23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:6 (NKJV)

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Authentic followers of Jesus Christ have experienced God's mercy. Mercy deals with the results of sin. Grace deals with the sin that caused the results.

Psalm 136:1 (NKJV)

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy (or kindness) endures forever.

Mercy is not merely withholding punishment, but reaching out to help us in our human condition.

Mercy is withholding judgement which we do deserve.  Grace is giving compassion which we don't deserve.

Moses built a Tabernacle for the Children of Israel to worship.  Within it was a Holy of Holies with an ark containing the law of God inside of it.

The High Priest would enter into it one a year for the sins of the people to sprinkle it will the blood of the sacrifice.

Exodus 25:16-17  (NKJV)

Moses writing: And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you.

17 “You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold;

18 And you shall make two cherubim (angels) of gold; of hammered work you shall make them at the two ends of the mercy seat.

21 You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you.

22 And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat,

God has forgiven us through the death of Jesus.  The Old Testament sacrifice was a picture of what Jesus would do for us in the New Testament.

Romans 3:21-25 (NIRV)

21 But now God has shown us his saving power without the help of the law. But the Law and the Prophets tell us about this.

22 We are made right with God by putting our faith in Jesus Christ. This happens to all who believe. It is no different for the Jews than for the Gentiles.

23 Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory.

24 The free gift of God’s grace makes us right with him. Christ Jesus paid the price to set us free.

25 God gave Christ as a sacrifice to pay for sins through the spilling of his blood. So God forgives the sins of those who have faith.

God did all this to prove that he does what is right. He is a God of mercy. So he did not punish for their sins the people who lived before Jesus lived.

John 20:11-12 (NKJV)

11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.

12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

These two angels sitting at the head and feet where Jesus's body had laid in his tomb fulfilled the picture of the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies mentioned in Exodus 25:18.

We meet God in His mercy seat found in our Lord Jesus Christ. Authentic followers of Jesus Christ have experienced the mercy of God.

In addition, authentic followers of Jesus Christ express the mercy of God. Jesus saves us from judgement to mercy.

1 John 3:17  (NKJV)

17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

Matthew 9:10-13  (NKJV)

10 Now it happened, as Jesus sat at the table in the house, that behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Him and His disciples.

11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12 When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Matthew 23:23 (NKJV)

Jesus speaking: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

We show mercy by meeting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of other people.  Mercy brings balance to how we express God's righteousness through us.

Authentic followers of Jesus Christ can expect the mercy of God in a ongoing basis.

Our mercy to people does not bring mercy from people, but mercy from God.  Authentic followers of Jesus Christ receive the mercy from God.

Psalm 23:6 (NKJV)

David writing: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;

Jude 21 (NKJV)

21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

Lamentations 3:22-23  (NKJV)

Jeremiah writing: Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

Romans 10:9-10,13(NKJV)

Paul writing: if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
