The Christian Catalyst

The Christian is to be a catalyst of change of the environment around us.  We are to influence it for the better.

Matthew 5:13-16  (ESV)

13 (Jesus taught) “You are the salt of the earth,

The condition of the world cannot be denied.  The world is in the process of decay.  There is a push to change wrong to be right and right to be wrong.

All of us at one time were like the world at one time.  We are no better than anyone else without the grace of God.

The Gospel should not make us haughty, but humble.  God did not leave us in the condition that He found us.

We are to be the salt of the earth.  Salt is a purifier and a preservative.Salt is white and represents purity.

Our faith makes us like salt.  If we are not like salt, we are not believers.  God expects us to influence the world.

We are not to be offensive because we are obnoxious.  We are offensive because we stand on the truth of what God has said.

but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

Jesus is saying that you can lose your influence.

Satan will attempt destroy in a moment what you have spent a lifetime in building.

This is a warning that you can lose your influence.  Once you've lost your influence.  It is impossible to be restored.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket,
but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

Not only is the world sinful.  It is dark.

Light is a visible reality.  We are to have the illuminating quality of light.  We are to reveal the character of God to the world.

The deeds that we do should reflect our relationship with Jesus, and we do them to manifest His glory.

Light is silent.  It gives direction.  Salt works secretly, but lights works openly.

The character of the Christian is the character of Christ. Jesus makes an assertion and not an assumption.

It's not you might be like salt or light.  You are salt and light.

We are how God expresses Jesus to the world.  You and you alone are God's method of communicating His salvation through Jesus.

There is no other plan.

You say that I'm the only Christian on my baseball team.  Then, God has entrusted that whole team to your influence.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Who is the one person that you can influence this week?
