Following the Holy Spirit

Galatians 5 (ESV)
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

1. The Holy Spirit and the Flesh are bitter rivals.

Flesh focuses on self.  The Spirit focuses upon the things of God.  To learn how to follow the Spirit, we must deny the flesh.

If God calls you to give something away, but you refuse.  You don't own it.  It owns you.

17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy,[a] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

2. The Holy Spirit gives us power over the flesh.

Bethlehem is God "Emmanuel" with us.  Calvary is God for us.  Pentecost is God in us through the person of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit gives us strength.  Strength is not about status.  It's about service.

Romans 8:11-12 (ESV)
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[a] from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

1 John 4:4 (ESV)
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Galatians 5 (ESV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.

3. The Holy Spirit speaks through the Word of God, the Bible.

God speaks just like He writes. If you understand the Word of God, you will understand the will of God.

2 Peter 1:21  (ESV)
21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

 4. The Holy Spirit speaks through a still small voice.

To hear the Holy Spirit, you must turn down the world.

1 Kings 19:12  (NKJV)
12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

5. The Holy Spirit will speak through mature Christians.

Hebrews 10:24-25  (NKJV)
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

6. The Holy Spirit fills us for function not for consumption.

The Holy Spirit doesn't want to make me better than you, but better than me.

God is wanting us to serve others to reach the world.  Don't struggle to be like Jesus.  Tap into the power of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:13 (ESV)
13(Jesus teaching:) If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
