How do we become the Greatest Of All Time?
Mark 10 (ESV)
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him
and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of
you.”
36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”
37 And they said to him,
“Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and
one at your left, in your glory.”
38 Jesus said to them,
“You do not know what you are
asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized
with the baptism with which I am baptized?”
39 And they said to him, “We are able.”
And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with
the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized,
40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not
mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has
been prepared.”
41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be
indignant at James and John.
42 And Jesus called them to him and said to
them,
“You know that those who are
considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones
exercise authority over them.
43 But it shall not be so among you.
But whoever would be great among
you must be your servant,
44 and whoever would
be first among you must be slave of all.
45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
John 13:14-17 (ESV)
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your
feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do
just as I have done to you.
16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant[ is not
greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do
them.
1. God's greatest puts service
before status.
Philippians 2:3-4 (ESV)
3 Do nothing from selfish ambition
or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than
yourselves.
4 Let each of you look not only to his own
interests, but also to the interests of others.
2. God's greatest puts service over status.
God doesn't create hardship,
but He can use it to develop your character.
Luke 10:30-37 (MSG)
30-32 Jesus answered by telling a story. “There was once a man
traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho. On the way he was attacked by robbers.
They took his clothes, beat him up, and went off leaving him half-dead.
Luckily, a priest was on his way down the same road, but when he saw him
he angled across to the other side. Then a Levite religious
man showed up; he also avoided the injured man.
33-35 “A Samaritan traveling the road came on him. When he
saw the man’s condition, his heart went out to him. He gave him first
aid, disinfecting and bandaging his wounds. Then he lifted him onto his donkey,
led him to an inn, and made him comfortable. In the morning he took out two
silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take good care of him. If
it costs any more, put it on my bill—I’ll pay you on my way back.’
36 “What do you think? Which of the three became a neighbor to
the man attacked by robbers?”
37 “The one who treated him kindly,” the religion scholar
responded.
Jesus said, “Go and do the same.”
If you see it, it will mess
with you.
"Don't ask, if I stop to help this
man, what will happen to me? Ask, if I do not stop to help this man, what will
happen to him?."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
3. God's greatest puts we
over me.
Acts 2:44-45 (ESV)
44 And all who believed were together and had all things in
common.
45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings
and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
4. God's greatest puts
worship over wealth.
Don't tell me that you love me
if don't love the people who I love.
Hebrews 13:15-16 (ESV)
15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice
of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are
pleasing to God.
