El Ro-ee: The God Who Sees Me

El Ro-ee: is similar to the Lord is our Shepherd.  It means God sees us, and he guides us.

The origins of this name comes from Hagar. Abraham was told by God to go to a land that I will show you.

Can you imagine getting up each day saying Lord which way will I go today?

Abraham's wife Sarah was barren for decades and could not have children.  Here's where the story picks up...

Genesis 16:1-8 NIV

1 Now Sarai (Sarah), Abram’s (Abraham's) wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.

Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”

Sarah blamed Abraham for her idea.

6 “Your slave is in your hands,” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.

Hagar's life became difficult.  We too are promised a more difficult life when we follow the Lord.  In her struggle, Hagar runs away.

7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8 And he said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?” “I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

What does the question mean underlined above?  God is asking Hagar where have you been brought from, or what has God brought you out of.  Where were you before I found you?  Egypt!

Hagar was an Egyptian slave who was given by Pharaoh to Abraham as a gift for his wife Sarah who Pharaoh at the time thought was Abraham's sister.  When Pharaoh's home was afflicted by a plague by God, he let Abraham go with Sarah and all his gifts which included Hagar.

Hagar was headed for Shur which was a border town of Egypt. She was going back, and there was nothing for her there. She had no vision for her future. Without vision, we have no hope.  If we have no hope, we have no purpose.

God has a destiny for your life before you were born.  If you can see it, you have hope.

Genesis 16:9-11 NIV

9 Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”

10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”

11 The angel of the Lord also said to her:“You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son.

You shall name him Ishmael (the Lord hears),for the Lord has heard of your misery.

This is the first time the Angel of the Lord is mentioned in the Bible.  The Angel of the Lord is Jesus, coming to save the Arab people.

Genesis 16:13 NIV

13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

When you get it that God sees you, it changes you. God is watching you, too!
